Salmon Run

Have you ever heard of the expression "salmon run"?

Probably you know of salmon. They are a kind of fish, and "run" means their movement up a river to spawn. Every year in the same season, the salmon come back to the river and swim up to the place they are born, and spawn. Male salmon also tag along with the females to release their sperm on the eggs.

Most salmon die there after they spawn, and the river is filled with their remains, which are eaten by birds, bears, and other animals.

In British Columbia, Canada, the salmon run is one of the most popular tourist attractions, and many tourists enjoy the spectacular sight of thousands of salmon swimming up the river to give birth to new life.

#1. Doctor Frost

Tom woke up. He had no idea where he was. The room was dark and smelled very bad. He knew he was in some kind of hospital but didn't know where.
"Hello?" Tom managed to say. He was still in some pain.
A nurse came to the doorway and looked at Tom with surprise and shock.
"Doctor Frost! Doctor Frost! He's awake. He's awake."
Soon the nurse returned to Tom's room with Doctor Frost. Doctor Frost was short and fat. He was bald and wore thick glasses. He looked like a bird when he walked.
Tom looked at the doctor and asked, "Where are my parents?"
Doctor Frost took off his glasses, rubbed his nose and then put his glasses back on, "Well, son, you've been asleep for 7 years. I'm afraid your parents are dead."
Tom's eyes filled up with tears, "What? How did they die?"
"Well." The doctor said, "They were on the Titanic when it sank."
Suddenly, Tom didn't feel good. "Titanic?"
Tom remembered studying about the Titanic in junior high. It was the largest ship ever built. It was called "an unsinkable ship." But on its very first voyage it hit an iceberg off the coast of Newfoundland, and sank, on April 10, 1912.
"The Titanic was almost a hundred years ago. What are you talking about?"
Doctor Frost spoke to the nurse, "His brain must be damaged." Then Doctor Frost turned to Tom.
"Son, the Titanic sank five years ago. It's 1917. You hit your head 7 years ago at the Ford Motor Company."
"No..." Tom said. He still couldn't remember exactly what happened, but he knew he never worked for Ford since he was still in high school. "I...Wait, I remember. The car. A car hit me."
"That's right." replied Doctor Frost. "The windshield of the car fell on you 7 years ago."
Tom was getting angry, "No, I was in an accident on a road last night." Tom was getting louder. "Where are my parents? Help!!"
The doctor seemed upset. The doctor held his chest in pain. Tom continued.
"Where is my family doctor? You are crazy! Don't touch me!"
Doctor Frost looked at the nurse who immediately went to Tom and gave him a needle.
"This will help you relax, Mister Martin."
Tom's eyes began to close. "My name isn't Mister Martin, it's Tom..." he couldn't finish his sentence.
As Tom started to feel sleepy Doctor Frost held his chest, "My heart!"
Doctor Frost fell to the ground, the nurse screamed and Tom slowly fell back to sleep.
As he began to dream he could hear his mother's voice, "Please Tom. Please come back to us."

＃１　フロスト医師

トムは目覚めた。彼はどこにいるのかとんと見当がつかなかった。部屋は暗く悪臭が立ちこめていた。病院のような所にいるとはわかったが、場所の見当はつかなかった。
「こんにちは。」トムは声をふりしぼった。まだ体には幾分かの痛みを感じていた。
看護婦がドアの所にやって来てトムをびっくり仰天して眺めた。
「フロスト先生！フロスト先生！目を覚ましました。目を覚ましました。」
すぐに看護婦はフロスト医師と共に部屋へと戻って来た。フロスト医師は背が低く太っていた。頭ははげていて厚いレンズのメガネをかけていた。歩いている姿はまるで鳥のようであった。
トムは医師を見て、「僕の両親はどこ？」と尋ねた。
フロスト医師はメガネを取り、鼻をこすってからまたメガネをかけて言った。「坊や、君は７年間眠っていたんだよ。残念ながら君のご両親はもう亡くなっている。」
トムの目には涙があふれてきた。「両親の死因はなんですか？」
医師は「それはだね、タイタニックが沈んだ際に乗っていたんだよ。」と言った。
いきなりトムは気持ち悪くなった。「タイタニックですか？」
トムは中学校でタイタニックについて勉強したことを思い出した。タイタニックは当時最大の船だった。それは「不沈船」と呼ばれていた。しかし、その最初の航海において、タイタニックはニューファンドランド沖で氷山に衝突し、１９１２年４月１０日に沈没した。
「タイタニック号の事件からもう百年近く経過している。彼らは何のことを話しているんだ？」
フロスト医師は看護婦に向かって「脳に障害を起こしているに違いない。」と言った。そしてフロスト医師はトムの方を向いた。
「坊や、タイタニックは５年前に沈没したんだよ。１９１７年だ。君は７年前にフォード社で頭を打ったんじゃ。」
「そんなバカな。」何が起こったか正確には思い出せなかったが、フォードなんかで働いた記憶はなかった。彼はまだ高校生だったのだから。「ちょっと待って、思い出したよ。車だ。車が僕をはねたんだ。」
「そうさ。」フロスト医師は答えた。「７年前、車のフロントガラスが君の上に落ちてきたんだよ。」
トムは腹を立てて言った。「違うよ。昨日の夜、道路で事故にあったんだ。」トムは声を荒げた。「お父さんとお母さんはどこ？助けてよ！」
医師は狼狽した様子だった。医師は痛みを感じて、胸を押さえた。トムは話し続けた。「主治医はどこだよ？あなたはおかしいよ！触らないでくれよ！」
医師は看護婦に視線を向けた。そして彼女はすぐにトムの所に行き、彼に針を刺した。
「これでごゆっくりできますわよ。マーティンさん。」
トムの目は閉じ始めた。「僕の名前はマーティン氏なんかじゃなくて、トム......」トムは文を終えることができなかった。
トムが眠気を感じ始めたとき、フロスト医師は胸を押さえた。「心臓が......。」
フロスト医師は床に倒れ、看護婦は悲鳴を上げたが、トムはゆっくりと眠りに落ちていった。
トムは夢を見始め、母の声が聞こえてきた。「トムや。私たちのところに帰っておいで。」

１１番目の奇跡：第一話

研究社さんより、１１月２５日に発売になる「たのしい英文速読教室」の第一話です。前１２回の連続ミステリーで速読の訓練をします。

The Eleventh

The Beginning

Tom was in high school. He was very popular. Everyone knew that next year he would go on to one of the top universities in the country. He had dark thick hair and dark brown eyes. He got along with most of the boys, and all of the girls loved him. However, Tom never had a girlfriend. Some people thought he was gay. Others figured he was more worried about studying than having a girlfriend. Some boys were jealous of his success but he was well liked. No one was brave enough to ask him if he was gay.
One night Tom was riding his bicycle home from his tutor's home. His tutor was a university student named Kelly. Tom thought she was so beautiful and smart. In fact, she was the reason he didn't have a girlfriend. The truth was, he loved her very much.
Tom was going too fast down the hill. He didn't care. He was very upset. He had told Kelly his true feelings and she only said, "You're too young."
This really hurt Tom. He was furious. He knew that he was going too fast, but the feeling of the wind on his face made him forget the sadness he felt.
A flash of light went across Tom's face as a car suddenly came out of nowhere. Tom quickly turned but it was too late. The car hit his front tire which sent him flying forward into the car's windshield. Tom's body smashed into the glass and his arms and legs fell lifeless. The driver wasn't injured but he was really shaken up. For a moment the driver was frozen. He couldn't move. Then realizing that a young boy was dying on his car, he called for help.
The scream of an ambulance could be heard. It got closer, and then the emergency team rushed Tom to the hospital.
Tom was still breathing and his heart was still beating, but he was not awake.
"Tom, can you hear me?" asked Doctor Benton.
Doctor Benton, did the best he could. Tom was still alive, but he was unconscious.
Tom's parents, Patricia and Ron, arrived at the hospital. Patricia burst into tears at the sight of her son hooked up to machines, with tubes in his mouth and nose.
"My baby." she cried.
Doctor Benton assured Tom's parents, "The best thing for him now is rest."
Tom's parents stayed with him the whole night. His condition never changed. Then, Tom woke up.

始まり（直訳）

トムは高校生だった。彼はとても人気者だった。来年は国内最高の大学に進学するであろうと誰もが思っていた。彼の髪は黒く濃く、彼の目は深い茶色だった。彼はほとんどの男子と仲良くしていて、女子は皆、彼のことが大好きだった。でも、トムは一度も彼女を作ったことがなかった。彼のことをゲイだという人たちもいた。また、彼は彼女を作るより勉強に興味があるのだと考える人たちもいた。男子の中には彼の成功をねたむ者がいたが、総じて彼は好かれていた。誰一人として、彼がゲイかどうかを尋ねる勇気がある者はいなかった。
ある夜、トムは家庭教師の家から自転車に乗って家に戻っていた。彼の家庭教師はケリーという名前の大学生だった。トムは彼女のことをとても美しく賢い人だと思っていた。実際、ケリーこそがトムが彼女を作らない理由だった。実のところ、彼は彼女を深く愛していたのだ。
トムは下り坂をスピードを出しすぎて下っていた。そんなことはどうでもよかった。彼は狼狽していたのだ。彼はケリーに本当の気持ちを打ち明けたのだった。そして、ケリーは「あなたはまだ若すぎるわ。」と言うばかりだったのだ。
このことでトムは本当に傷ついた。怒り心頭であった。彼にはスピードを出しすぎていることはわかっていたが、顔に当たる風によって、迫り来る悲しみを忘れることができたのだ。
一瞬のせん光がトムの眼前を横切り、突然一台の車がどこからともなく飛び出してきた。トムはすぐに曲がったが遅すぎた。車とトムの自転車の前輪が接触し、彼は空中に舞い上がり車のフロントガラスに突っ込んだ。トムの体はガラスに突っ込み、彼の手足からは力が抜けてしまった。ドライバーにはケガはなかったが、彼はひどく狼狽していた。しばらくの間彼は凍り付いてしまった。動くことができなかったのだ。だが青年が彼の車の上で死に瀕しているとわかり、彼は助けを求めた。
救急車のサイレンの叫びが聞こえてきた。サイレンは近づき、救助隊がトムを病院へと急送した。
トムはまだ息をしており、彼の心臓は脈打っていた。しかし、彼に意識はなかった。「トム、聞こえるか？」ベントン医師が尋ねた。
ベントン医師は最善を尽くした。トムは一命は取り留めたものの、意識はなかった。
トムの父と母、パトリシアとロンが病院に到着した。パトリシアは、口と鼻にチューブを入れられ、機械につながれた息子の姿を見て、わっと泣き始めた。
「私のトム！」彼女は叫んだ。
ベントン医師はトムの両親をなだめ、「彼に今一番大事なのは休むことだよ。」と言った。
トムの両親は彼に一晩中寄り添った。彼の状況は決して変わることはなかった。
そしてついに、トムは目を覚ました。

Starting a Company

Do you want to be rich?

One way to get rich is to start your own company and make a success of it. Many famous people, including Bill Gates and Henry Ford, became rich this way.

You might wonder how you can start a company. You just need some capital and to register your company name at the Legal Affairs Bureau. It's quite easy, but what happens after that is a totally different matter. You need to have a solid purpose and a strong will to continue to do business. Many people start businesses all the time, but many of them quit before their business becomes stable, so be strong-willed.

You might be able to make your company bigger. To get the money to finance expansion, of course, you can borrow money from a bank. Not only that, you can also issue stocks in your company. If you sell those stocks, you can get more capital. Stocks are the divided ownership of the company, so selling stocks means that a part of your company goes into the hands of stockholders. Then you will have to divide and distribute the profit to stockholders in the form of dividends. Also stockholders have their say in how you run your company.

If you want to make your company really big, like the brand names you often hear on TV, you might consider listing your company on the stock market. The stock market is where investors buy and sell stocks in large amounts. To list your company on the stock market, your company has to fulfil many requirements, and after getting listed, you will have to take on some risk, such as of being bought out and in the fluctuation of stock prices, but you will probably be able to get a substantial amount of capital to expand your business.

Anybody can make a company and start a business any time. It's an opportunity open to everyone in a free market economy.
