Wanna be like a NEITIBU?

2010年01月08日23:01

Strangely, almost everybody learning English in Japan, even a beginner, wants to be like a native speaker, and some people are ashamed of speaking English which is even a little bit short of that of a native speaker. I think this is a great psychological barrier making Japanese people poor at cross-cultural communication. Typically they think it's better not to speak a word, if there is a slight possibility that they might be considered unable to speak perfect English like that of a native speaker.
I have studied English for whopping twenty years, and I now teach advanced English grammar to students preparing for university entrance exams. I have studied English almost every day over these two decades, but I admit that I can't speak English like a native speaker. Never. Probably I will continue to study the language until the day I'll die, but I'm not sure if I will be able to speak fluently like a native speaker.
Unfortunately most Japanese learners of English spend their time waiting for the day that will never come when they will be able to speak English as fluently as a native speaker. They continue to learn difficult rules and special expressions without having any chance to try them out.
In my opinion, what you have learned have any value when you "use" it. There is a famous line by the Beatles, "Life is very short." Don't just waste your valuable time, waiting for the day that will never come. You don't have to be like a native speaker. In fact, there are more non-native speakers of English than native speakers in the world. Besides, most native speakers don't speak standard English. Their English is also imperfect like mine and yours.
To be able to "use" a foreign language, it is very important for you to have the courage to make mistakes and correct them. Don't ever think, "Learn first, and then use it," but "Use first. Learn from mistakes." This way, I promise, you will enjoy learning the language more, and you will be a far greater cross-cultural communicator.

The song that you say is "We Can Work It Out", isn't it?
It's one of my favorite song.

This topic made me impression!

"Learn first, and then use it," but " Use first.Learn from mistakes."

Very good advice☆
I didn`t think of them so far.

To use English ahead, I want to have a positive mind! Thanks for your spirit!

Last year, my English teacher and I were talking and I asked him ,"Did you join in the program ?" He corrected me that I should have used 'join'in that case. I was so embarassed because I made such a easy mistake. After that, I have never forgotten the incident and told the students this experience, warning them not to use 'join in' but 'join'.

That's what you want to say, isn't it ?

Yeah.
'Trial and error' is the best and only way to
master a language.

If truth be told, I hesitate to speak English for fear of making any mistakes. That's why I am the one who teach English. But I will keep in mind what you advised me.

The another problem for Japanese, especially students, is that we don't have enough opportunity to talk to native speakers. There is an ALT at school, but I think students don't make use of him/her. Or, it seems that they don't know how to take advantage of him/her. When I was a senior high school student, I used to write an English essay and be correctd by my ALT. So I will encourage students to communicate with ALTs as much as possible. Meanwhile, I'd like to do the team teaching actively with ALTs.

副詞節中にwillが使われているのが目立ちますが、これは例外かなにかでしょうか?
